Amavisd

Amavisd is the connection point where Postfix or other mail server can call, and Amavisd then will call up a bunch of helper programs, normally various scanners you can specify in a config file which lives here

  • /etc/amavisd/amavisd.conf

Amavisd has changed pretty significantly since it was called just Amavisd, the one you want is Amavisd-new, it's better, tastes great, runs better

[edit] stuff it does

  • raises or lowers spam scores for specific addresses
  • raises or lowers the thresholds for spamassassin
change where it kills it
change where it tags it
change if it bounces, deletes or whatever
  • blacklist / whitelist certain senders
  • calls up whatever anti-virus scanner you might have running
  • can submit anti-virus samples to whatever company's submission system
